The course will be offered by first and second year Pediatric Dentistry Residents with the aim of contributing to the professional community innovative and updated information in the area of pediatric dentistry. The first year residents will discuss the following topics: Sleep Apnea in Children and Adolescent. Children with apnea are often sleep deprived, making them more prone to irritability, crankiness and frustration. Also in transgender children and adolescent “understanding the basics”, residents will discuss the identification of children and adolescent when they are critical about their identify and development. The second year residents will give a comprehensive review of dental management in pediatric patients with hematological disorders and provide realistic information in handling common hematological diseases in children.

Course Objectives:

  • To familiarize with the definition of sleep disordered breathing and obstructive sleep apnea.
  • To learn detailed information related to evaluation and treatment of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea pathophysiology.
  • To define the importance of sleep health for children and adolescents common trauma in disadvantaged children.
  • To learn the Structure-Function/Function-Structure of Habitual Mouth-Breathing and Malocclusion in the Primary/Early Mixed Dentitions.
  • To enhance dental professionals awareness of the transgender child or adolescent.
  • To familiarized with the delivery of culturally competent health care services.
  • To familiarize with terms, definitions and public policy related to LGBTQ.
  • During the presentation the audience should be able to correctly define the hematological diseases of greatest incidence in relation to Pediatric Dentistry.
  • Be able to correctly define signs and symptoms that could be found during a clinical evaluation.
  • Develop each clinical case efficiently that is associated with treatment of patients that have hematological disorders and the usage of current medications.
