Dr. Jocelyn A. Medina Paneto – Is a licensed psychologist by the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and has a professional certificate in Health Psychology from the Psychological Association of Puerto Rico.  She earned her Ph.D. in Academic/ Investigative Psychology from the University of Puerto Rico in 2007. She is an Associate Professor of the UPR-School of Dental Medicine. She co-teach Human Development and Behavioral Management and topics related to human behavior and its relationship with health all through the School’s curriculum. Dr. Lizbeth Hernández Perdigón – Is a private practitioner Speech and Language Pathologist. She earned in 2008 her M.Sc. in Speech and Language Pathology from the Carlos Albizu University in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She works, since 2016, in Alternative for Kids Therapy Center where she evaluates and treat children referred by the Department of Education of Puerto Rico and supervised Speech and Language Therapists. Course Description This course will address the basics of language development, its relationship with human cognition and the importance of making referrals to health professionals   specialized in speech and language.  It will also focus on the oral cavity and the main role that it has in speech and language development.  This course will give the oral health professionals tools to help in the early detection of possible speech and language pathologies.

Course Objectives:

  • Recognize the theories of language development
  • Recall the neuroanatomical structures related to language development
  • Recognize the importance of language in cognitive development.
  • Differentiate between the types of Language
  • Differentiate between Language and Speech.
  • Recognize the uses of the oral mechanisms structures
  • Recognized the uses in speech of the oral mechanisms structures
  • Differentiate between a Speech Pathologists and a Speech Therapists.
