DR. CARMEN A. SANTA NORIEGA is a 1982 graduate of the University of Puerto  Rico School of Dental Medicine.  In 1987  she received her Certificate in Endodontics from Tufts University School of  Dentistry and in 1995 a Certificate in Gerontology from the University of  Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus. Dr. Santa is Professor in the Department  of Endodontics at the University of Puerto Rico, School of Dental Medicine and  among others she has been Associate Director of the Graduate Endodontic Program  and Director of pre-clinical and clinical courses at the University of Puerto  Rico, School of Dental Medicine.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The conference will present an update of  different procedures performed during endodontic treatment.  The diagnostics aids will be review and the  current classification of pulpal and periapical diseases will be presented.  Emergency treatment selection will be  examined.  Endodontic treatment basic  concepts and modern methodology for root canal treatment will be review.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
  • Update in the diagnosis of pulpal and  periapical diseases.
    • Introduce current classification for  pulpal and periapical diseases.
    • Present diagnostic tests and aids in  order to make a correct diagnosis.
  • Select appropriate treatment according to  pulpal and periapical diagnosis.
    • Review  of emergency procedures.
    • Select  treatment for cracked teeth.
  • Review use of rubber darm as a standard of care  in endodontics.
  • Mention modern technologies used in  endodontics.
  • Review the basic concepts during root canal  treatment.
    • Understand the use of an apex locator for working length determination.
    • Assess hand instrumentation vs. rotatory instrumentation.
    • Evaluate effectiveness of different irrigants.
  • Present guidelines for difficulty  assessment in case selection.
